The Colca valley is a canyon that was created by the erosive action of the Colca River in southern Peru. The valley has been known by different names like ‘The Lost Valley of the Incas’, ‘The Valley of Wonders’, ‘The Valley of Fire’ and ‘The Territory of the Condor’.

Geography:

It is located about 100 miles (160 km) northwest of Arequipa. The valley stretches for 100 km and reaches a depth of 3400m making it almost twice as deep as the Grand Canyon.

Tourist attraction:

The Colca canyon is home to two of Peru’s largest volcanic mountains, Mount Coropuna and Mount Ampato. Also possibly the biggest attraction is the Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus), known as the largest flying bird on the planet, whose most well-known habitat is this region. ‘Cruz Del Condor’ is a popular tourist hotspot to view these condors.
When to visit:

The canyon is most beautiful and safe during the period from May to December after the rains have stopped. The valley is soon becoming the preferred destination for hiking, river-rafting and mountain biking.
