This amazing stadium was named after the Maracana neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. Its opening took place in the year 1950 to host the FIFA World Cup. On June 16, 1950 the first match took place. It is also used for football matches between major football clubs in Rio de Janeiro like Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminense and Vasco da Gama. It has also hosted a number of musical concerts and sporting events other than soccer.

It was the world’s biggest football stadium at the time of its inauguration. The official attendance count for the final match between Brazil and Uruguay stood at 199,854; which is a world record.

It has been selected to host the world cup final in the 2014 world cup, and also as the site for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympic Games.

Although this stadium is open of tourists, the best time to see this stadium is during an actual match.
